For the past ten years I have taught in the British Columbia Independent School System. First in South Korea and most recently in Vancouver. I have been a teacher, advisor, cohort lead and theatrical director at St George’s School in Vancouver since 2015. Before that, I was a teacher and theatrical director at BIS Canada: BC Off-Shore School, in Bundang South Korea.
At St. George’s school, I have been granted many opportunities for both program and curriculum development. This has included the creation and implementation of the school’s first Theatre Cohort as well as the development of curriculum for Physical Education for Theatre 10 and Television Production 11/12. As well, I have directed the past four middle school theatrical productions while at St. George’s.
The theatre cohort program redesigned four grade 10 subjects: English, Social Studies, Drama and PE to all be taught through the lens of performance. In addition to the performance focus of the course work, students in the cohort program work through-out the year to write and rehearse their own one act play, finally taking the show on tour to a number of unique school communities on Vancouver Island. This program has proven to be incredibly successful by offering boys a unique opportunity to create and take full ownership of their story and work. In creating this program, I have cultured invaluable skills towards boy centered learning, collaboration with faculty and program operation.
In Television Production 11/12 students learn to tell their story within the medium of film. This hands-on course allows students to build a number of valuable skills and abilities on a daily basis. As well, students in the course are challenged to create engaging and dynamic promotional videos for a variety of school events in addition to broadcasting live school events. This scaffolded learning process allows students to work in an intuitive state when tasked to solve real world problems in real time.
For the past ten years, I have had the pleasure of directing ten theatrical school productions. Taking thirty to forty young people on a three-month journey to create something out nothing is an incredibly challenging yet rewarding undertaking. While completing my Master of Education, for my thesis project I created a documentary film that followed student leadership within the theatre troop during one of our productions. This unique format of research and documentation allowed for a very natural and organic assessment of the strengths and weakness of our model for student leadership.
Passion is contagious, it has a gravitational pull. Every student is unique. As an educator, I harness my passion for the creative to inspire life-long learning in every student.
